Tesla's 2023.32.4 Update: Enhanced Autopilot Visualizations Bring FSD Features to Mainstream

by Lucky LI on Sep 22, 2023

In the latest Tesla update, version 2023.32.4, Tesla has taken a significant leap forward by improving its Autopilot visualizations. This update brings a slew of enhancements that were previously exclusive to the Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta program into the mainstream Autopilot experience.

New Visualizations Unveiled

To achieve Full Self-Driving capabilities, Tesla vehicles need to create a 3D representation of the real world, akin to the graphics in a video game. Tesla first introduced dynamic vehicle resizing in March 2022 as part of the FSD Beta program. Now, this visualization enhancement is making its way to standard Autopilot. With this feature, Tesla vehicles will analyze and determine the width, height, and length of nearby vehicles, adjusting the 3D model representation accordingly. Unlike the previous static 3D models used for depicting other vehicles, this dynamic resizing provides a more accurate portrayal of their real-world dimensions.

Whether it's distinguishing between a full-length bus and a smaller vehicle or accurately sizing up compact cars, this enhanced visualization greatly enhances the vehicle's situational awareness. It effectively bridges the gap between what the car perceives in the real world and how it is displayed on the screen.

However, it's worth noting that this could occasionally result in some visually odd representations, like a vehicle scaled down to resemble a baby stroller or a truck that appears 'squished' to match its actual size. These quirks are inherent to Tesla's 3D models, but they remain far more accurate than the previous static representations.

Open Door Visualization

While not all the visualizations from the FSD Beta feature in the US and Canada have made their way into this update, Tesla has introduced a useful feature: the ability to display when a vehicle's door is open. In the standard gray color, the door is shown, but if Autopilot detects that the door might interfere with the vehicle's path, it will be highlighted in orange.

Tesla's continuous expansion of visualizations is a critical step in building trust in the vehicle's capabilities and ensuring a safe driving experience. Beyond the current improvements, we anticipate the inclusion of more visualizations from FSD Beta, such as road edges. Furthermore, we hope to see representations of common driving elements like various traffic light configurations, diverse crosswalks, barriers, and other road features. This promises to create a more comprehensive and accurate depiction of the real-world driving environment.
