For Tesla customers in Connecticut, the wait is finally over as the EV maker secures a game-changing deal with the Mohegan Tribe. The agreement allows Tesla to build a showroom at the Mohegan Sun, a renowned entertainment destination, granting Connecticut residents the convenience of test driving, purchasing, and taking delivery of their vehicles right in their home state
The deal marks a significant triumph for Tesla, which has faced numerous hurdles in Connecticut in the past. Despite the company's persistent efforts to support its customers within the state, it has encountered staunch opposition from organizations like the Connecticut Automotive Retailers Association (CARA). Connecticut state law mandates that vehicle manufacturers must sell their products through dealerships, a model that Tesla, as a newer carmaker, does not adhere to due to its direct sales approach.
By partnering with the Mohegan Tribe and constructing the showroom on their land, Tesla was able to circumvent these challenges. Kevin Lowry, the assistant general manager at Mohegan Sun, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the unique status of Tesla's brand. Operating on sovereign land allows them to align with many Connecticut laws and regulations while offering flexibility concerning certain rules.

Governor Ned Lamont also showed support for the deal, acknowledging Mohegan Sun's right to operate independently as a sovereign nation.
Nevertheless, traditional dealerships in Connecticut have expressed discontent with the agreement. Bradley Hoffman, the co-chairman of Hoffman Auto Group, clarified that their issue lies not with Mohegan Sun but with Tesla's perceived evasion of state laws. Despite having a diverse range of over 65 electric car models, dealerships are concerned about consumers lacking the support typically provided by dealers.
The upcoming Tesla showroom, strategically located across from Todd English's Tuscany restaurant, will offer a seamless car-buying experience for customers. Vehicle deliveries will be facilitated at the nearby Sky Tower valet, and visitors can also enjoy test driving popular Tesla models around the resort. As the Mohegan Tribe and Tesla join forces, Connecticut's EV market is set to witness a new chapter of accessibility and convenience for Tesla enthusiasts.
