Honda and Acura have recently made a significant decision concerning their transition to electric vehicles (EVs) in North America. In an interview with AutoBlog last week, Honda expressed its intention to adopt Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. This move is viewed as pivotal in their efforts to develop competitive EVs while ensuring an ample network of charging stations for extended driving range.
Noriya Kaihara, President and CEO of American Honda Motor Company, emphasized the importance of integrating NACS into their strategy, echoing their commitment to a seamless transition to electric mobility. This strategic decision aligns with their forthcoming EV models – the Prologue and the ZDX under the Acura brand. Both vehicles will be built on General Motors' Ultium architecture, with the ZDX initially equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) inlet.
The collaboration with General Motors has played a crucial role in Honda's adoption of NACS. As GM became the second automaker to adopt NACS after Ford, the partnership further solidified Honda's choice. GM's Chair and CEO, Mary Barra, emphasized their vision of producing millions of high-quality EVs and establishing an ecosystem to accelerate widespread EV adoption.
Jay Joseph, American Honda's VP of Sustainability and Business Development, highlighted the merits of Tesla's Supercharger network. He praised its reliability, consistent maintenance, and rapid issue resolution. This track record has positioned Tesla's charging network as a benchmark in the EV industry. Notably, Tesla's Supercharger network continues to expand, adding 318 new Supercharger Stations in the last quarter alone, totaling over 5,000 stations and 48,000 connectors globally.
In light of these developments, Honda's decision to adopt NACS opens up access to Tesla Superchargers for their EV lineup. This alliance between Honda, Acura, and General Motors reflects a strategic commitment to delivering competitive electric vehicles with the convenience of Tesla's robust charging infrastructure.
