Tesla Unveils Latest Model Y with Radar Option: A Sneak Peek into China's EV Future

by Lucky LI on Oct 16, 2023

Tesla enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as the electric vehicle giant has recently made significant strides in China’s ever-evolving automobile market. According to recent filings from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Tesla has officially submitted plans for its latest Model Y. What makes this unveiling particularly intriguing is the inclusion of radar as an optional feature, a detail that has stirred the curiosity of automotive aficionados.

The MIIT, in its latest catalog open for public comment, showcased the new Model Y, allowing eager consumers to provide their feedback between October 17 and 23. For industry insiders, this catalog entry signifies the concluding chapter in the vehicle’s regulatory journey before it reaches the eager hands of consumers.

In this MIIT catalog, the new Model Y is identified by two distinct model numbers: TSL6480BEVAR3 and TSL6480BEVAR4. Both variants feature a powerful single motor with a maximum output of 220 kW and are equipped with cutting-edge LFP batteries sourced from Tesla’s trusted battery supplier, CATL.

What truly piques interest is the array of options available for the new Model Y in the MIIT catalog. Not only does it offer radar as a choice, but it also presents varying wheel styles and front fog lights. Size-wise, the Model Y stands tall at 4,750 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width, and 1,624 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm. Its top speed clocks in at an impressive 217 km/h (134 mph).

For Tesla enthusiasts in China, the Model Y holds a special place, being the company’s best-selling vehicle, especially in recent weeks as the market eagerly anticipates the first deliveries of the upgraded Model 3, dubbed the Model 3 Highland by EV enthusiasts. Tesla introduced the updated Model Y in China on October 1, complete with minor enhancements, all without altering its price, which starts at RMB 263,900 ($36,120).

Excitement has been building, evident from social media posts indicating that deliveries of the new Model Y have possibly commenced in China. The question remains: do the model numbers TSL6480BEVAR3 and TSL6480BEVAR4 represent the Model Ys already gracing the roads, or do they hint at models poised to embark on their journey into the hands of eager consumers? Only time will reveal the full story, but one thing is certain: Tesla’s latest offering is bound to redefine the electric vehicle landscape in China and beyond. Stay tuned for the electrifying journey ahead!
