When it comes to Tesla's Model 3, change is the name of the game. While we were aware that the badge on the back of the refreshed Model 3 was transitioning from the iconic logo to the word "Tesla," one unexpected addition caught our attention - a plus sign. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China recently provided a sneak peek at what they're calling the "Model 3+," a fresh badge adorning this updated series. It's important to note that this isn't the same as the Performance variant or the rumored Plaid model.
New Badge, New Dimensions
According to regulatory filings, there will be two distinct versions of the car: a rear-wheel drive (RWD) with a 194 kW motor and an all-wheel drive (AWD) dual-motor setup, boasting an impressive 331 kW of maximum power. In China's regulatory landscape, every new vehicle model must receive MIIT's approval, sometimes resulting in early revelations of a vehicle's specs and images. While automakers typically prefer to keep details under wraps until the official launch, these sneak peeks provide car enthusiasts with an early taste of what's to come.
One of the most significant takeaways from this regulatory unveiling is the introduction of the "Model 3+" badge, distinguishing it from the other trim. However, it's worth noting that this terminology might change, as Chinese automakers have a history of adjusting badges after MIIT documentation.
Comparing Dimensions: Model 3 vs. Model 3+
Diving deeper into the specifics of this freshly badged variant, the Model 3+ will feature an AWD dual-motor system powered by an NMC battery supplied by LG Energy Solution. When compared to the previous Model 3 edition, the Model 3+ showcases subtle yet noticeable differences in its dimensions. Its length now extends to 4720 mm, adding an extra 26 mm compared to the prior model's 4694 mm. In terms of width, it has slightly narrowed down to 1848 mm, a slight reduction from the previous 1850 mm.
The car's overall height remains almost identical to its predecessor, with a minor reduction to 1442 mm, just 1 mm shorter. Despite these changes, the wheelbase remains consistent at 2875 mm. Alongside these alterations, there are revamped tire options, available in specifications of 235/40/R19 or 235/45 R18, with some versions featuring the choice of Hankook tires.
This refreshed series maintains the core structure while presenting a refined take on the Model 3's classic design, including an upgraded glove box. As the market eagerly awaits its launch, which is speculated to be in October, Tesla China has released the financial details for this facelifted version. The Model 3+ will come with a price tag of 295,900 yuan, roughly translating to around 40,600 USD, positioning it as a premium offering in the lineup.
