Tesla's Standard Range Shake-Up: Raising the Heat on Lucid and Performance Rivals

by Lucky LI on Aug 17, 2023

Tesla's groundbreaking move to introduce Standard Range versions of its flagship Model S and Model X has sent ripples through the electric vehicle (EV) landscape, particularly challenging automakers that have been focusing on performance-oriented vehicles. Among these competitors, Lucid Group stands out, especially since it has aimed squarely at Tesla's luxury lineup with its Air sedan configurations.

Tesla's recent addition of Standard Range options for the Model S and Model X in its Design Studio has disrupted the status quo. These offerings provide customers with luxurious, high-performance vehicles at a substantial discount. Notably, the performance metrics remain unchanged, with the primary difference being a reduction in range – 310 miles for the Model S and 269 miles for the Model X.

This strategic shift by Tesla has put those like Lucid, led by former Model S team member Peter Rawlinson, in a pivotal position. The decision-making juncture for these automakers has never been more crucial.

The implications for Lucid from Tesla's new affordable configurations are more apparent than ever. Tesla's Long Range and Plaid configurations for the Model S and Model X were priced in a similar range to Lucid's top-tier offerings within the Air sedan lineup.

While the Model S Plaid boasts a 1.99-second 0-60 MPH acceleration time, Lucid's Air Grand Touring reaches the same speed in 2.6 seconds. Additionally, the Air GT surpasses the Model S in range, providing 516 miles compared to Tesla's 396 miles.

However, the focus now shifts to pricing, with Tesla undercutting the Air's Pure configuration starting at $82,400 by pricing the new Model S at $78,490. This price adjustment might tilt the scales in favor of consumers while posing a challenge for Lucid.

Lucid has grappled with delivery challenges, missing consensus estimates in Q2. The company delivered 1,404 vehicles against the expected 2,000, facing demand struggles. This predicament has left Lucid vulnerable, especially as Tesla introduces superior products at a lower cost.

While Lucid offers exceptional range with the Air, factors beyond mileage come into play, including the vehicle's suitability for everyday driving. Lucid has encountered software-related issues, a common pain point during the initial stages of EV development. Such concerns can impact consumer confidence.

Tesla, on the other hand, has its own share of challenges, with claims of lower-than-expected range and polarizing opinions about CEO Elon Musk. However, for many, a well-functioning and reasonably priced car outweighs these concerns. Lucid could find itself at a disadvantage with Tesla's new Standard Range offerings for the Model S and Model X, creating additional pressure on EV competitors through Tesla's strategic price adjustments.

In a landscape where Tesla has already initiated substantial price cuts, putting pressure on rivals across various markets, this latest maneuver could be a significant blow to Lucid. Tesla's Standard Range options for the Model S and Model X present consumers with another compelling reason to opt for the undeniable leader in the EV realm.
