Enhancing Your Tesla Experience: Navigate on Autopilot Unveiled

by Lucky LI on Feb 22, 2024

Today in the U.S., Tesla introduces its most advanced Autopilot feature yet: Navigate on Autopilot. This groundbreaking addition, part of Software Version 9.0, marks a significant milestone in autonomous driving technology. Tesla owners with Enhanced Autopilot have collectively driven tens of millions of miles, contributing invaluable real-world data that underpins the development and validation of Navigate on Autopilot.

Navigate on Autopilot revolutionizes highway driving by offering active guidance from on-ramp to off-ramp, including seamless lane changes, navigating interchanges, and executing exits—all under driver supervision. While drivers must currently confirm lane changes using the turn stalk, future iterations will grant the option to waive this confirmation, pending regulatory approval for fully autonomous vehicles. Until then, drivers bear the responsibility of remaining attentive and in control of their vehicles.

To engage Navigate on Autopilot, drivers must enable both Navigate on Autopilot and Autosteer in the Autopilot settings menu. Once activated, the center display presents a 360-degree visualization with a blue line indicating the suggested path. The system suggests two types of lane changes: route-based changes to maintain navigation and speed-based changes to optimize cruising speed.

Customizable settings allow drivers to tailor Navigate on Autopilot to their preferences, including four speed-based lane change options: Disabled, Mild, Average, or Mad Max. The system intelligently suggests lane changes based on surrounding traffic conditions, aiming to keep the vehicle moving efficiently.

Navigate on Autopilot is the product of Tesla's Enhanced Autopilot platform, featuring advanced hardware including ultrasonic sensors, radar, external cameras, and a powerful onboard computer. Leveraging billions of miles of real-world driving data and cutting-edge machine learning algorithms, Tesla continues to refine and enhance its autonomous driving capabilities.

This week, Navigate on Autopilot begins its rollout to U.S. customers with Enhanced Autopilot or Full Self-Driving Capability, with plans for global expansion pending regulatory approval. As Tesla advances towards its full self-driving vision, Navigate on Autopilot represents a significant leap forward in automotive innovation.
