Mastering Tesla's Odometers: A Guide to Tracking Mileage and Efficiency

by Lucky LI on Aug 08, 2023

Are you keen to keep a close eye on your Tesla's mileage? Do you want to monitor your trips and gauge your vehicle's efficiency? In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the world of Tesla's odometers, explaining how to access both trip and overall mileage readings, and offering insights into utilizing trip cards on the Model 3 and Model Y.

Viewing the Odometer:

Accessing your Tesla's primary odometer is straightforward. Navigate to the "Controls" section by tapping the car button at the bottom-left corner of the screen. Then, select the "Software" tab. Underneath the car's image, you'll find vital information including the vehicle model, odometer reading, and the vehicle's VIN.

Trip Odometer / Tripmeter:

Tesla vehicles offer the convenience of two trip odometers for specific tracking needs. These trip meters can be particularly useful during road trips, enabling you to monitor energy consumption, distance covered, and average energy efficiency. To access them, go to Controls > Trips. Here, you'll find "Trip A" and "Trip B," which can be renamed and reset as needed.

Tips for Usage:

Many owners keep one trip odometer counting from the day of purchase, tracking energy usage and average efficiency from the beginning. While the main odometer records distance, not efficiency, trip odometers can be employed to track tire mileage or rotations. Tesla allows for two trip meters, alongside other default meters.

Current Trip Odometer:

The 'Current Trip' odometer resets after each drive or if the vehicle remains parked for an extended period. It uniquely displays time driven in minutes, in addition to distance traveled and average energy usage. It can be reset anytime by tapping the 'Reset Current Trip' button.

Since Last Charge Odometer:

This odometer tracks distance and energy used since the last charge. It's beneficial for understanding your vehicle's performance per charge cycle. Resetting this odometer requires charging the vehicle.

Using the Tesla Mobile App:

Accessing the primary odometer through the Tesla app is effortless. Open the app, scroll down to the bottom, and find the odometer displayed underneath the vehicle model. Unfortunately, only the primary odometer is available here.

Viewing Odometer While Driving:

For Model 3 and Model Y drivers, Tesla reintroduced trip cards. Swipe left on the mini music player controls to access these informative cards, offering quick views of trip meters and tire pressure. To toggle between the music player and trip cards, tap the gray music icon in the bottom menu.

Selecting Odometers on Trip Card:

Your vehicle's Trips card can display up to four chosen trip meters. Navigate to Controls > Trips and select 'Show in Trips Card' for the desired trip meters. It's worth noting that trip cards aren't available for Model S and Model X.

With this comprehensive guide, you'll be well-equipped to utilize Tesla's odometers effectively, keeping track of mileage, efficiency, and trip details with ease.
