Tesla Solar Roof: The Niche Investment with Zero Power Bills - A Review by Marques Brownlee

The Tesla Solar Roof has been somewhat overshadowed by the company's primary focus on its electric vehicle division. While its rollout has faced challenges and delays, some customers who have installed the product are more than impressed.

One such customer is Marques Brownlee, the well-known YouTube reviewer (MKBHD), who decided to opt for a Solar Roof with Powerwall setup for his home. Being a Tesla owner, he saw the value in having a Solar Roof system despite its relatively higher cost.

Brownlee's setup is nothing short of impressive, featuring Solar Roof tiles providing 29.313 kW and three Powerwall batteries offering 40.5 kWh of energy storage. The entire system came with a hefty price tag of $120,948.04, but thanks to the federal tax credit, the cost was reduced to approximately $93,000.

Although the system remains expensive, it ended up giving Brownlee the benefit of $0 power bills throughout the year. Even during winter, when the system's energy capture was impacted, the net metering credits accumulated during other months covered the home's grid usage during colder periods.

Considering the reviewer's annual power consumption, Brownlee estimated that the system's payback period would be less than ten years, a reasonable timeframe considering the Solar Roof's long-lasting design.

The Solar Roof, for now, remains a niche product due to its price and limited availability. Nevertheless, for those fortunate enough to have it installed, the solar shingles prove to be a worthwhile investment. As a cutting-edge technology, it is bound to improve over time.
