Tesla's China Recovery: Insurance Registrations Show Positive Trend

by Lucky LI on Aug 11, 2023

In a week that concluded on August 6, Tesla's insurance registrations in China unveiled a heartening revival. This resurgence propelled the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer into the ranks of a select few automakers in China to experience an upswing in insurance registrations within that period.

Although Tesla China doesn't divulge weekly sales data, the ebb and flow of the company's vehicle sales can often be gleaned indirectly through insurance registrations across the nation. These figures, meticulously monitored by industry observers in China, paint a comprehensive picture of the automotive sector's weekly dynamics.

According to these industry monitors, the week spanning July 31 to August 6, 2023, saw Tesla China secure 12,800 insurance registrations—an encouraging 20.75% rise from the preceding week's tally of 10,600 registrations, ending on July 30. It's worth noting that the week ending on July 23 had seen a mere 7,700 insurance registrations for Tesla China nationwide.

Adding depth to these insights, data sourced from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) underscored that Tesla achieved sales of 64,285 vehicles crafted at the Gigafactory Shanghai during July. This number encompasses both Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers, which were not only supplied to China's domestic market but also exported. It's crucial to acknowledge, however, that July's figures signify a 31.38% decline from June's robust sales of 93,680 units, establishing July as Tesla China's least productive month so far this year.

While the subdued July results might raise eyebrows, they align with expectations. During Tesla's second-quarter earnings call, CEO Elon Musk outlined that the company aims to achieve 1.8 million vehicle deliveries this year. Nevertheless, the third quarter's production volume is anticipated to experience a minor dip due to temporary shutdowns for strategic factory enhancements. This is particularly relevant for Giga Shanghai, Tesla's manufacturing hub catering to China and various other global markets, which could be undergoing pivotal upgrades.

Musk illuminated this during the earnings call, stating, "We continue to target 1.8 million vehicle deliveries this year, although we expect that Q3 production will be a little bit down because we’ve got some shutdowns for — a lot of factory upgrades. So, just probably a slight decrease in production in Q3 for sort of global factory upgrades."

In the midst of these dynamic shifts, Tesla's journey in China remains a compelling narrative that underscores the intricate interplay of production, upgrades, and the resilience of demand.
