In a bold move reflecting its ongoing workforce restructuring, Tesla has decided to eliminate its Summer internships, shocking many within the industry.
The company's recent broad layoffs, affecting everyone from top executives to service technicians, have reduced its employee count by approximately 14,000 individuals.
Even college students who secured internships with the pioneering electric vehicle manufacturer have not been spared, as reports surface indicating the rescinding of their Summer internship offers.
One student from Miami University expressed dismay, revealing, "At 8:46 am, I opened a Tesla email for flight info. By 11:25 am, my internship offer was gone."
Another student lamented the abrupt withdrawal of her internship offer merely three weeks before her anticipated start date, stating, "While I am incredibly disappointed...this moment will only help me grow stronger as a professional."
The timing of these internship cancellations poses a significant challenge, coinciding with the end of Spring semesters nationwide. Typically, internships are secured between February and April, leaving those affected by Tesla's decision in a precarious position with limited alternative prospects.
Glassdoor data indicates that Tesla's Summer interns typically earn between $18 and $28 per hour, further underscoring the loss experienced by affected students.
However, students are not the sole casualties of Tesla's recent workforce reductions. The company has been aggressively cutting costs amidst a challenging period between growth phases, leading to the departure of key personnel, including executives from the Supercharger team.
This decision is particularly surprising given Tesla's recent expansion of its charging infrastructure to accommodate electric vehicles from other manufacturers. CEO Elon Musk has assured that Supercharger construction will continue, albeit at a slower pace.
